Here’s a list of a few of my favorite free desktop applications. This is not meant to be a a complete list and the following is in no particular order — just a few of my favorites.

- Notepad++ – free source code editor and Notepad replacement, which supports several programming languages.
- CCleaner – a freeware system optimization and privacy tool.
- Google Earth – fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings and even explore galaxies in the Sky.
- IrfanView – free image viewer for educational use (schools, universities and libraries) and for use in charity or humanitarian organizations.
- Foxit Reader – a free PDF document viewer and printer.
- CutePDF – a free PDF writer.
- TrueCrypt – free open-source disk encryption software… especially useful for encrypting sensitive thumb-drive information.
- AVG – offers a free version that offers protection against viruses and spyware.
- Spybot – detects, removes, and prevents spyware.
- Google Desktop – search your computer as easily as you search the web with Google.
- Pandora – not really a desktop application, but it rocks.
